Purpose of the Trip

The focus of my 2004 journey to Uganda was to investigate the needs related to HCCP and the Bulanga project, and to see the progress to date. These were the specific tasks...

  1. Review the work that had been done in the previous year.
  2. Interview all HCCP employees to determine their needs and their understanding of their jobs. I also wanted to know about their vision for the coming year.

    a. Mobilizer (Michael) – The mobilizer's job is to bring any child in need of sponsorship to the attention of HUGS, and to gather information on each sponsored child.

    b. Headmaster (Bosco) – Bosco was to meet with local officials to determine what was needed to accredit our new school. He was also to learn from other schools in the area about how a school should be run.

    c. Healthcare Worker (Priscovia) – Priscovia was to determine the need for a local immunization clinic in the Bulanga area. She was to create local women’s group and supply these women with necessary information related to health issues. Priscovia also performed an area needs assessment for health needs of the community.

    d. Foreman (Costant) – The goal was to examine all work done by Costant in the previous year, review his dealings with other workers, and assess his ability to stay within his stated budget.

    e. Director (Fred) – Fred was to oversee the workings of the above listed employees, and to maintain accurate accounting of funds. He was to keep a friendly relationship with the local officials. Finally, Fred was to seek additional sponsorship for the building plans and children.
  3. Speak to the director and administrator of HCCP to determine the needs for the coming year.
  4. Meet with local women’s groups initiated and maintained by the HCCP healthcare worker.
  5. Find all sponsored children and gather information about their current condition.
  6. Meet with local officials in Rakai district to inform them of our future plans.
  7. Meet with the HCCP Board of Directors and have a conversation about the needs and resources of both HCCP and HUGS.
