Construction Progress in Bulanga

May 20, 2004 - Helping Ugandans Grow Stronger, Inc. (HUGS) is pleased to announce the completion of some initial structures within the current construction project in the village of Bulanga in Uganda's Rakai District.

Our partners, Hope Child Care Program (HCCP) of Uganda, recently began this project to build educational facilities and housing for the orphans of Bulanga. In January, they made bricks and cleared the grounds of the 20-acre site so that the building process could begin. In February, they determined building placement and began construction of a water collection shed (shown in the pictures). This is the only means of gathering water, and it was necessary to complete this structure prior to the rainy season. A latrine was also built in March.

Construction of the water shed was completed in April. Prior to the building of this water shed, villagers had to walk 5 miles to the nearest river to obtain water. The next task will be the installation of large plastic storage tanks to hold the collected water. The water shed will also be used for make-shift classrooms while construction of the school facilities is underway.

The hauling of water and bricks was made easier through HCCP's acquisition of a 4-wheel drive truck. Material transportation costs are high in the remote village areas, so this truck will have paid for itself before the project is finished. The truck was purchased using specially-donated funds provided by HUGS.
