2005 Mission Trip to Bulanga
by Leanne Leonard, HUGS volunteer

January 5, 2005 - My first opportunity to travel to Uganda was with my friend Cheryl in October of 2004. I was nervous but accepted the challenge. I joined up with Vicky and the HUGS program, and that two week trip completely changed my life. Later the following May, I spoke about my trip at the 2005 HUGS Gala held in San Diego. The Gala was a success and having another opportunity to share my experiences in Uganda only energized me more. I was telling everyone I knew about my trip and the wonderful people that live in Uganda.

Then came an unexpected opportunity… the HUGS Board of Directors asked if I would be willing to go back to Uganda and work alongside Vicky for five weeks. I was so excited about the possibility, but sure for many reasons that it would never happen. After many prayers and conversations with friends and family, I decided that I really wanted to go. The next problem was work, but in the end my wonderful boss and colleagues eagerly supported my plans and allowed me to go. Just two short months later I was on a plane to London.

I met Vicky at the airport in London and we debriefed each other on our lives and our separate journey’s to get there. On our flight to Entebbe, we discussed all the work that needed to be done in the village. When we finally landed in Uganda, we were both tired but very excited about the work ahead.
