Eastlake Elementary Receives "Cool School" Award
March 19, 2007 - As a result of 9-year-old Sofia Silva's efforts in creating the successful "Kids Feeding Kids" program, local television station KFMB channel 8 today presented their News 8 Cool School Award to Sofia's school, Eastlake Elementary in Chula Vista.
Sofia's class participated in painting "bowls of love" that will be auctioned at the annual HUGS Spring Gala on April 28th. 100% of the auction proceeds will be used to buy food for children in the village of Bulanga in the Rakai District of Uganda.
"It's just fantastic how one idea from one third grader can breed into a whole class of third graders and hopefully help the world," said Tim Glover the principal of Eastlake Elementary. "These are invaluable lessons... a chance for kids to reach above and beyond themselves and learn they can make a difference."
"8’s Cool School" is a project of KFMB News 8, Sylvan Learning Center and the San Diego County Office of Education. If you are interested in hosting a Kids Feeding Kids event in your area, please e-mail your inquiry to Sofia's mom, Sue Silva. For additional information, call HUGS toll-free at 888-766-4847.
